DESCRIPTION OF THE BUILDINGThe Ancient Theater is located at the foot of the eastern slope of the highest hill of Ohrid under the Samoil`s fortress near one of the main entrances to the fortified town of Gorna Porta, from where one captures the unforgettable view of the Ohrid Lake and the mountains that surround it. It was built more than two millennia ago, around the end of the 3rd or the beginning of the 2nd century BC during the period of late Hellenism and was intended to display dramatic musical and poetic plays to the lovers of art. Immediately after the Roman conquests of these regions in 148 BC, the theatre, possibly for an extremely short time, was adapted to the needs of the Roman way of life. The building was rearranged into a theater with an arena of gladiatorial battles and wild beast fights with several of the lower row seats being demolished and several cages being built for the animals and the orchestra with the honorable seats being enclosed by a firewall. An Epitheterone was built later in the upper zone which increased the capacity of the theatre to 5000 spectators. In 1999 the site was discovered, uncovered and preserved and since 2001 drama and musical performances and various other events are held.
